Peru launches LNG for transportation

QUAVII will invest US $3 million in the construction of the first two LNG fueling stations in the north of the country.

QUAVII, has just carried out the first LNG refuelling for the first SCANIA LNG truck headed to Trujillo. "Today, in Peru we have made it possible for long-haul LNG trucks to travel more than 1,000 kilometers in the most sustainable and efficient way  in our country," said José Antonio Mannucci, managing Director of Scania Peru ,  who are the first to bring LNG trucks to Peru.

Alberto Polifroni, general manager of the the gas distribution company QUAVII, said that this year, the company will invest US $3 million in the construction of the first two LNG stations. They will be located in the cities of Trujillo (La Libertad) and Huarmey (Ancash).

In this way, the QUAVII LNG stations would be the first public LNG filling stations in Latin America. Argentina’s Galileo built and operates the first private LNG filling station in LATAM, in the Argentine province of Mendoza since last January.

Polifroni highlighted the benefits of the use of LNG trucks in the country, such as savings of 40% in diesel fuel consumption, elimination of fuel losses, greater range and lower environmental impact.

The corporation is trying to obtain the concession in Piura and believes it can be finalized before the end of the year. They are also preparing bids for new distribution projects in the south-central part of Peru.

"A normative framework should be developed to encourage investments so that natural gas from the north and the rainforest reaches the entire Peruvian territory," said the executive. "Peru's problem is the lack of strategies for massification and of rules for investors."

Quavii, a company of Colombian capital is responsible for distributing natural gas pipelines to 150,137 households in the cities of Huaraz, Chimbote, Trujillo, Pacasmayo, Chiclayo, Lambayeque and Cajamarca, as well as providing clean and economic energy to the Industrial sector and transport.
